COVID-19 won’t last forever! That’s good to remember isn’t it? At the moment, it feels all-consuming, many are frightened, if we’re honest, I imagine most of us are at least a bit anxious. We’re keeping our distance from everyone, and it is isolating, it’s hard. It’s especially hard for some people, but it’s hard for all of us in different ways.
I was struck by the words of a hymn we sang on Sunday, in the final verse it speaks about a day when “the storms all past for evermore.” It reminded me COVID-19 won’t last forever! That’s helpful to remember isn’t it? We need to remember that as we endure the hardship of the present, it won’t last forever. Having something to look forward to can help us through the trial at the moment.
Psalm 23 has a similar theme. It’s a very well-known and comforting Psalm, and in the Psalm David looks beyond his present suffering (of which he knew plenty) to a victory meal (v5) and dwelling with God forever (v6).
It’s a Psalm our Lord Jesus himself would have sung, as faced the agony of the cross, one of the things that got him through was surely knowing a victory meal awaited Him. He would rise again and share his victory with all who trust Him. It was this joy that led Him to endure the cross (Hebrews 12:2).
We don’t know what this virus will cost us, but we do know it won’t last forever, and we can know the one who has walked through the Valley of the Shadow of death for us, and promises to be our Shepherd through whatever valleys we face. So take heart, the storms will one day pass forevermore.
