“Science will eventually save us” ?

According to William Haseltine on CNN the scientists are developing antivirals and monoclonal antibodies that together are looking promising for treating Covid-19 if there is no vaccine available.  So he concludes his article with the words “Science will eventually save us.”

We praise God for many scientific developments that make life better for many and we pray that they do continue to make breakthroughs to help more people, but can we really say “science will eventually save us”?  After all, even if they do find a vaccine for Covid-19 something else will get us!   The statistics are pretty depressing 1 out of 1 people dies!  Science may help to save us from Coronavirus and other viruses but they cannot save us from death.

There is a more serious problem than Coronavirus that has affected every single one of us and guarantees our death.  The Bible calls it sin.  The heart of the problem is the human heart.  Deep down we don’t want God to rule over us.  Sometimes we express that loudly, for example I recently heard someone changing the words of Psalm 146 from “In God we trust” to “In the experts do we trust!”  Sometimes it is that obvious, but more often it’s just life lived with no reference to God.  It is shocking that even in a pandemic, many still try to ignore God, and try and find their own way without God.

The Bible says the result of rejecting God is more serious than Covid-19, it is eternal death and science can’t save us.  But there is one man, the God-man, Jesus Christ, who can save us.  2000 years ago he walked this earth and showed his power of sickness and even death, yet he died to save us.

Dr Li Wenliang in China was one of the first to try and raise the alarm about the Coronavirus.  Tragically he died from it at the age of just 34.  Jesus Christ warned the world of something worse that has affected every single person, and he deliberately died in our place so that he can give us new heart and a new life.  Science can’t save us, Jesus Christ will save all those who trust in Him forever.

5 Thus says the Lord:Cursed are those who trust in mere mortals and make mere flesh their strength, whose hearts turn away from the Lord.6 They shall be like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see when relief comes. They shall live in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land.

7 Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord.8 They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream. It shall not fear when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green;in the year of drought it is not anxious, and it does not cease to bear fruit.
