How often should we praise the LORD? Once a week? Once a day? More? According to our Psalm for today, our praise should be from the rising of the sun to its setting! (V3).
Why? Because, there is no one like Him. He is the most glorious. Just as your heart may rise at the site of a beautiful sunset, so our hearts should rise in praise as we think about how great God is. That there is no one like Him. No one as powerful, or as loving.
But our praise isn’t just about feelings. In Numbers 15 God’s people were told to put tassels on their garments so that they might remember and keep God’s commandments. God knows our hearts will be tempted to go after other things, and He knows not only that those things are only a cheap imitation of His glory. As Augustine discovered, God has made us for Himself and our hearts will be restless until they find their hope in Him.
None of us praise God as we should, but our reading from Colossians 3 tells us that we died with Christ, Christ took all our failure to praise God on himself. The secret to praising God more is to set your heart on things above. To think today about the glorious future when Christ appears and shares His glory with you. To think of all He has achieved for you. And as you think about that, you will want to put off the way you used to live, and to put on a new set of clothes – compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, bearing with one another and letting Christ’s Word dwell in you by singing Psalms.
How will you praise Him today?
