God made some enormous promises to Abraham. These were totally undeserved promises, we discover in Joshua 24:2 that Abraham’s father worshipped foreign gods. Yet God promised to make a great nation, give them a land and they would live under God’s blessing and one of his descendants would bring blessing to the whole world.
It was hard to believe that God could do this through one old childless couple, yet here we are at the end of Joshua, and God’s people have become a great nation, and they have entered the land! Joshua reminds the people God has been faithful, He’s kept His word (23:14 ) and the question now is, will they serve the Lord and live under His blessing, or will they serve other gods, the god of the nations?
It should be an obvious and easy choice as they look at all that God has done for them, and consider that the gods of the nations are nothing and have done nothing for them. Joshua challenges them to choose who they will serve and tells them his choice “as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
It’s a helpful challenge to us today, who will you serve? Will you worship the one true living God or will you go after the gods of the nations? Will you serve the Lord, or will you live for popularity? For money, for power, for relationships?
One man who was living for money was Zacchaeus (Luke 19). He was filthy rich, money had become his god and he did anything to get it, even if it meant cheating people. But when he met Jesus, he saw someone more valuable, someone who loved him and wanted what was best for him, someone which came and sought him even when he was not choosing God. When he met Jesus, he was changed, money lost its grip on him and he chose to serve the Lord.
Our Lord Jesus Christ is still seeking and saving the lost. He is the fulfilment of that promise to Abraham, the one who will bring blessing to the nations. Will you serve Him today?
