David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17, 1 Chronicles 2, Acts 12)

He was truly terrifying. Over 9ft tall he towered over everyone. He had a simple challenge, come and fight me! If you beat this giant all your enemies will submit to you.

It is a favourite Bible story for many young boys – who hasn’t imagined that they could be the hero! There have been many messages from preachers encouraging you to slay the giants in your life. But the truth is, that we are not called to slay any giants, but simply to stand with the one who already has.

You and I are not David in 1 Samuel 17. We are more like the cowering Israelites who need a hero to defeat our enemies. Our worst enemy is death, and none of us can defeat it. But in our Lord Jesus Christ we have a hero who defeated death for us. He is willing to stand in your place and fight the enemy for you.

David had a right concern for God’s glory, he was rightly angry that this heathen giant defied the living God. Our Lord Jesus Christ, born in the line of David, had an even greater concern to honour God. His whole life was about bringing glory to God. His passion for God’s glory was such that He was willing to go to the cross to bring glory to God by demonstrating God’s justice and mercy.

At the cross God’s justice is satisfied as the Lord Jesus pays the price for the failure of all those who will trust Him. Every sin is paid for, either by us if we refuse to turn to Jesus, or by Him if we will ask Him. At the cross God’s mercy is displayed as He shows broken sinners that he is willing to forgive us.

Our hero went into battle for us, it looked like He had lost as he died a humiliating death, but that death was the very means of him overcoming our worst enemy.

If you’re trusting in the Lord Jesus, your worst enemy is defeated, it’s not about you being really strong and defeating the giants in your life, but about Christ being really strong and already defeating your worst enemy so that you can bring glory to God by enjoying Him forever.
