Joy in God’s King and place (2 Sam 3-5; 1 Chr 12; Ps 122; Acts 22)

Finally David is recognised as king, it looks so promising! Here is a king who will bring justice and defeat their enemies and bring peace and prosperity to Israel. No wonder first Chronicles 12 tells us that there was joy in Israel.

Psalm 122 seems a fitting song of celebration, here are God’s people finally in His place, with a good king and it looks like God’s blessing. Have the promises to Abraham been fulfilled? Well, there is not yet much blessing for the nations. That is to come through David’s far off grandson, our king Jesus.

If they celebrated over David, how much more should we celebrate over Jesus! David was a good king, but he had his faults and his reign was not forever. Jesus is the perfect king, whose reign is forever and who brings in Jew and Gentile. As Christians we can sing Psalm 122 with joy knowing that Jerusalem for us is the heavenly city that will come down from heaven (Revelation 21). It represents all of God’s people, the best foretaste that we have of it now is in the local church that delights in God’s Word. Will you be glad to join your local church today this Lord’s Day? Will you pray “urgently and warmly for our local churches and for the churches of Christ worldwide, that they would be, more and more, places under the rule of God’s King and government of God’s good law, and therefore places of supernatural harmony and safety in the midst of a dangerous world?” (Christopher Ash, Psalms).
