Today is Duchenne Awareness Day. Duchenne is a progressive muscle wasting disease that can make life really hard. We lost my sister-in-law (Elizabeth) to this disease, and our son suffers with it. He has fractured his skull, and broken his leg twice and is now dependent on a wheelchair to get around. It can be really hard at times, and I honestly don’t know how I would cope if I did not have the glorious hope of the resurrection. In the Lord’s providence, today is not only Duchenne Awareness Day but it is also the anniversary of William’s baptism. A special day where William received the covenant sign of belonging to Jesus.
We have discovered the same thing that the apostle Paul discovered when Jesus said “my grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” There are things we have faced that we dreaded, but every single time the Lord’s grace has been sufficient. The future at times looks very bleak, but we have the glorious certain hope of the resurrection. The truth is that all of us are getting weaker and will face a day that our hearts will stop, but for those who trust in the Lord Jesus we will be raised for and eternal joy. I am so grateful William knows this, it helps him and all of us to cope.
Today we celebrated William’s baptism by going paddle boarding – we borrowed a beach wheelchair and got him into the sea and onto the paddle board, and he even caught a few waves (with me hanging on the back to try and keep him upright!). We got an ice cream afterwards, it was a great day. Duchenne is painful, but God is good, and we look forward to the day when the Lord will wipe away every tear, and Elizabeth and William will run and not grow weary!
