Congratulations if you have reached the book of Numbers in the Bible reading plan! Well what about Numbers? Let’s be honest, unless you’re into maths, it’s not the most exciting title! And as we begin to read about how many from each tribe, we might be forgiven for wondering what relevance those has to us today.
But remember the big picture, remember God’s promise to Abraham, that he would become a great nation, live under God’s blessing and bring blessing to the nations and that God would give them a land. God made this promise to an old couple who had been unable to have children. Now look at them! 603,550 men, plus women and children! That should strengthen our faith, when doubts come our way, we can look and see how God has acted in the past and be encouraged that He always keeps his promises. Our God is always faithful to his word. Just as God promised, His people have become a great nation, and now they are on the brink of entering the land He promised them.
God is trustworthy! That means we can get on with trusting Him in hard circumstances, just like those examples in our reading in Hebrews 11. It means that like Moses, we can chose to be mistreated with the people of God, rather than enjoying the fleeting pleasures of sin (Hebrews 11:25). We can consider the reward of Christ as far greater than anything this world offers (Hebrews 11:26). We can consider our present trials as light and momentary because of the weight of glory that is ahead of us. God will keep His Word, that means for all those who trust in Jesus, there will be incredible blessing. Amen, come Lord Jesus.
Heavenly Father, we thank you that you are always faithful to your promises. Please encourage us and strengthen us as we read your Word to see how faithful you are. May this strengthen our faith, so that like Moses we don’t look to this world for our satisfaction, but look to your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen
