The name of the LORD should be praised (Numbers 15-18, Psalm 113, Colossians 3)

How often should we praise the LORD? Once a week? Once a day? More? According to our Psalm for today, our praise should be from the rising of the sun to its setting! (Psalm 113v3).

Why? Because, there is no one like Him. He is the most glorious. Just as your heart may rise at the site of a beautiful sunset, so our hearts should rise in praise as we think about how great God is. That there is no one like Him. No one as powerful, or as loving.

But our praise isn’t just about feelings. In Numbers 15 God’s people were told to put tassels on their garments so that they might remember and keep God’s commandments. God knows our hearts will be tempted to go after other things, and He knows not only that those things are only a cheap imitation of His glory. As Augustine discovered, God has made us for Himself and our hearts will be restless until they find their hope in Him.

None of us praise God as we should, but our reading from Colossians 3 tells us that we died with Christ, Christ took all our failure to praise God on himself. The secret to praising God more is to set your heart on things above. To think today about the glorious future when Christ appears and shares His glory with you. To think of all He has achieved for you. Life now can be so tough, it’s so easy to fix our eyes on our failures and our pain. But when we set our heart on things above it can help us to get a right perspective. The future is so bright , so good, Christ has secured it for you, you can then get through today.

As you think about what Jesus has done, and the glorious future ahead, you will want to put off the way you used to live, and to put on a new set of clothes – compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, bearing with one another and letting Christ’s Word dwell in you by singing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.

Heavenly Father, you are worthy of all our praise all the time, we are sorry that we don’t praise you as we should. Thank you that Jesus lived the life that we should have lived and died for us and are lives are now hidden in Him. Help us today to set our minds on things above. Amen
