The heart of God (Proverbs 3-5; Romans 10)

We saw yesterday that if you love God, it’s because He chose to have mercy on you. In Romans 10 we see the heart of God for unbelieving people as God says “all day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.” (V21).

God has been so patient, think of His treatment of Israel, He rescued them out of Egypt, and how long is it until they are grumbling! He offers them the promised land and they respond by saying they can’t take it because the people living there are too big! When they eventually get into the land, we see time and again they reject His ways and get into trouble, and He rescues them (book of Judges). They reject God as their king and want a king to be like the other nations. King after king fails, God sends them prophet after prophet, but they continue to reject Him and so they end up in exile, far away from the land. But God still doesn’t give up on them, He continues to speak to them through His Word, He brings them back to the land, but they continue to reject Him.

Listen to God’s heart:

“When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. The more they were called, the more they sent away; they kept sacrificing to the Baals and burning offerings to idols.” (Hosea 11:1-2)

And as Jesus predicted, they would even reject him (see Matthew 21:33-44).

It is so sad to see God’s love rejected, but how many times do we do the same? We think we know better than God, that His ways are not for our good. It’s so sad to see God’s love rejected, but wonderfully Israel’s rejection led to the gospel going out to all nations so that “Everyone who believes in him [Jesus] will not be put to shame.” (Romans 10:13).

God’s heart is that this message reaches all people, and how will He get this message out? Through people like you and I! How will people hear about the love of God if we don’t tell them, invite them, offer them a book? We have the most wonderful news of the most wonderful God who offers the most wonderful rescue. “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the Word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17).

Have you responded to God’s offer of salvation? If so, who can you pray for an opportunity to share the message with today?
