Whatever you are facing in life, what a comfort Christ our warrior king with us. Psalm 127 is not a psalm about us having lots of children, but of the blessing of belonging to Christ. We are told first of all that the Lord builds the house.
The word ‘house’ was used in psalm 122 where the ‘house’ means the temple (122:1) or the house of David (122:5). Here in Psalm 127 we are told the Psalm is “of Solomon” meaning that it’s written by or for Solomon. Solomon was the son of David, and the one who was to build the temple. He is reminded in this Psalm that he can’t do it in his own strength, but the Lord will give success. The Lord will see that the temple is built and that the house of David is built.
Building the house of David means the coming of the Messiah, the king who will reign forever (remember God’s promise in 2 Samuel 7). Like all Scripture this Psalm finds its ultimate fulfilment in Jesus which means that we are not the ones having the children, but we are the ones who belong to the warrior king (v4). When we trust in Jesus, we are adopted into God’s family, we get to call God our Father, and Jesus is considered as our brother. And yet in Hebrews 2, Jesus not only calls us brothers, but “children God has given me” (Heb 2:13).
What a blessing to know and sing of Jesus as your warrior king (Psalm 127:4). Whatever you are facing, what a joy to know Him fighting for you. In our reading from 2 Thessalonians 2, we get to see what a mighty warrior king He is. 2 Thessalonians 2 speaks of the coming of the lawless one, awful opposition to Jesus. But look what the warrior king Jesus does, he kills him with the breath of his mouth (v8). It’s s bit like the battle that is described in Revelation 20:7-10 as God’s enemies march against Him – there is no battle! Jesus, our warrior King is so powerful that He only needs to speak and His enemies are defeated. What a blessing to belong to Him, what security we have in Him.
But you might be thinking if He’s so powerful, why hasn’t he sorted out my struggle, or why hasn’t he stop evil. Well, we can be assured here that it’s not that He lacks the power. He will do it, but He is patient, giving opportunity for people to turn to Him before it’s too late. And if we belong to Him, we can know Him working for our good even in the midst of the battle. What a blessing to know Christ as your warrior king. Do you know Him?
