“My eyes shed streams of tears, because people do not keep your law.” (Psalm 119:136) The psalmist had a real passion that God’s Word was heard, delighted in and obeyed. As we read this challenging Psalm, we should we pray that God would give us a greater desire to follow Him.
In our reading from 1 Kings we see one man with a zeal for God’s Word to be kept. Elijah is rightly angry that God’s people are worshipping Baal instead of the one true God. He challenges them “How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him, but if Baal, then follow him.” (1 Kings 18:21). This was a courageous thing to say as he stood in front of of 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah, and a king who loved a bit of Baal worship! But Elijah had his eyes fixed on the true king. His zeal was that people would turn back to the true God. As the contest unfolds, he shows them how powerless Baal is to do anything, and then the one true God, the LORD reveals himself as Elijah prays.
Even after such a clear revelation, Ahab’s wife is so spiritually blind that she seeks to kill Elijah rather than turn to the LORD.
Let me ask you, do you delight in God’s Word, does it upset you when God’s Word is ignored in our world today? Or are there areas where you are limping between two opinions – desiring to follow God in some areas but to go the world’s way in others. The truth is there is only one man who ever perfectly delighted in God’s Word, our Lord Jesus Christ. As we read Psalm 119, we should see the passion of our Lord Jesus more clearly. Think of him singing this Psalm, and knowing what it would cost him to forgive people who failed to long for God’s rules at all times. See your saviour perfectly singing this Psalm for you, fulfilling it for you, so that you can have life. In our Lord Jesus Christ we have the clearest revelation of God, how long will you limp between two opinion? If Jesus Christ is God, follow Him.
