Have you explored and meditated on the security that Jesus offers? Psalm 48 invites us to do just that. It’s a Psalm that praises God for who He is, how great He is, and how great His place is. The Psalmist invites to walk around and see (v12). When God is your God, you don’t need to fear the nations, you are secure. When the nations come against you, they stumble and fall as they see God’s place (v4-7).
And yet, as we read this, we mustn’t make the mistake that many of the Jewish people made, in thinking their security was in a place. Jeremiah has to rebuke the people of God for thinking how they lived didn’t matter, as long as they had the temple (Jeremiah 7). God doesn’t want us to trust in a place but in Him, the temple was only ever a foreshadowing of Jesus, the perfect meeting place of God and man.
Jesus is the place of God’s steadfast covenant love (v9). We mustn’t trust in buildings or places, but in Jesus Christ. The Psalm invites us to explore and meditate on the security we have in Christ. Think of his steadfast love, who else would die for you? See how committed He is to you, how can you doubt His love? See that because of Jesus, your sin is totally dealt with, you are forgiven and you will live with God in the new heavens and the new earth.
In our reading from Matthew 4 we see the strength of Jesus in resisting temptation, here is the new Adam who succeeds where the first Adam failed. Here is the serpent crusher who says ‘no’ to Satan. Because of Jesus’ victory, we can have security forever. The Psalm ends by challenging us to explore Christ so that we can tell the next generation. This is not a message to keep it ourselves, it’s too good for that. If you have children, what do they see you excited about? Is there anything better than knowing God forever and ever?
Today, spend some time exploring Christ, see the security he gives (see John 10, Romans 8), and pray God would excite you and give you opportunity to tell the next generation.
