The joy of creation (Isa 26-29; Psalm 65; 1 Cor 4)

Psalm 65 celebrates God’s goodness in harvest. It feels like creation is performing as creation should, and how good it is! It is right to praise God. The psalmist begins by praising God that He hears prayer (v2). What an incredible thing, to think that the Almighty God, who made and cares for the world, actually hears us when we pray! He will listen to everyone who comes to Him for forgiveness, for in Jesus, He atones for our sin (v3). If we draw near to Jesus, we can dwell with God (v4), and we will find true satisfaction in Him. He is the true temple, the meeting place with God.

After praising God that He hears us, the Psalmist moves to praise God for His works in His creation. The one who made the majestic mountains (v6) and who removes the threat of the storm, He stills the waves (v7). When Jesus Christ did this the disciples did indeed stand in awe as (v8) tells us.

When creation is behaving as it should, it is so good. The psalmist celebrates God’s hand over the morning and evening. He celebrates the rain that makes the crops grow. We may complain about too much rain, parts of the world about too little. But when you stop and consider, it is amazing that God waters the earth. At the moment, the world is broken, it’s under a curse. But every spring we get a reminder of the hope that is there for Christians, that one day God will renew the whole earth and creation will behave as it should all the time, for there will be no more curse.

The joy of the harvest, is a foreshadowing of the joy there will be when Jesus Christ returns and makes all things new. That is a day to long for, and a day to rejoice in.
