There is a war going on for your mind. What will you fill it with? As we head into a new year, it’s a great time to think about good habits to get into. One of the most important habits is reading God’s life giving word. The five day Bible reading plan is a great way to read through the whole Bible in a year. I love the way it follows the history of God’s salvation plan and links different parts together. I also really like that you get 2 days spare each week to catch up or to meditate deeper on something that struck you in the week’s readings. You can get the plan here (https://www.fivedaybiblereading.com/five-day-bible-reading-schedule/), and I aim to post some thoughts on one or more of the readings each day.
The plan begins at the beginning (Genesis 1)! And how we need these chapters in today’s confused and hopeless world. These foundational chapters tell us there is a God who made everything and made you and I in His image. This tells us we are not random but are precious! There is purpose and we are made to glorify God and enjoy Him forever (as the Westminster shorter catechism puts it).
Psalm 19 celebrates God’s wonderful creation and His revelation. It is an amazing world, and amazing that we can know the one who made us, He has revealed himself to us and His word revives our souls.
Why isn’t everything as good as these 2 readings tell us? We’ll find out in tomorrow’s reading from Genesis 3. But wonderfully in the gospel reading for today (Mark 1) we see our Lord Jesus beginning to restore everything! His first words are “repent and believe” – this is the way to begin and continue the Christian life.
Jesus then gives us snapshot after snapshot of how good His kingdom is. As He heals the sick and drives out demons, He shows us how good it will be when he returns to put everything right for His people. How we long for the day when there will be no more sickness, shame or evil. Those who belong to Jesus look forward to an eternal weight of glory that will make our present troubles seem light and momentary. If we want that perspective we need God’s word to revive our souls (psalm 19). Why don’t you commit to sticking with this reading plan for the year? There’s a war going on for your mind, will you fill it with God’s Word?
